In case you haven’t seen it in person, here’s a little walk-through of my exhibition Freestate (and some insight into the origins of the Free Republic).
Live on Sunset Boulevard...my videos!
I’m excited to announce two presentations of my video work on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, with support from WeHo Arts and the City of West Hollywood!
The City of West Hollywood proudly presents THE FREE REPUBLIC OF CALIFORNIA, an exhibition of the work of Cole Sternberg, on two digital exhibition locations on the Sunset Strip. THE CONSTITUTION, a unique multi-channel work, plays at the top and 30 minutes past the hour at 8410 Sunset Blvd. and FORWARD MOMENTUM plays every 10 minutes throughout the hour at 9039 Sunset blvd. From February 1st- March 31st, 2021.
During the last 10 months of our existence, we have clung desperately to the phrase ‘in this unprecedented time’ because descriptions fail us. As if awoken from a spell, the rest of the United States has begun to see what many in West Hollywood already knew: the continued propagation of institutionalized inequity and the violence and insurrection at the Capitol, laid bare the fragility of our principles and republic. Like the City of West Hollywood, Artist Cole Sternberg understands that humoring exclusion, abuse and mendacity leads to collapse. As the nation tips towards an uncertain future, THE FREE REPUBLIC OF CALIFORNIA offers refuge. Sternberg has presciently fashioned the ultimate utopian, environmentally friendly, life raft. When there is no greater act of self-preservation than isolation, Sternberg explores the extrapolation of that tantalizing notion. Secession from the United States of disinformation promises a peaceful, just and environmentally sustainable path forward. THE FREE REPUBLIC OF CALIFORNIA is the rejoinder.
