a moment in the sun
Cole Sternberg's film, a moment in the sun, is a vision of a romantic end of the world, an ending where the beauty of the environment overtakes the harshness of humankind. It is an amber journey and pays homage to Ray Johnson's last performance. Sternberg recreates artist Ray Johnson's last moments before his suicide, lingering in the same hotel room in Sag Harbor, NY, walking and contemplating jumping from the bridge in the same location as Johnson did in 1995. Framing this specific journey are performance clips blending the work of Johnson and Sternberg within the context of environmental destruction. In the end we are left with a sudden end to Sternberg's journey, signifying the earth taking itself back. Sternberg states “it is meant to be the journey of one as a symbol for the journey of all of us. Blind to the beauty around us, we eventually destroy our own environment, the seas rise, and it is as if we were never here.”
